Borazon Grinding Wheel: A Potential Upgrade To Diamond Grinding
The Borazon grinding wheel boasts hardness and effectiveness that rivals diamond wheels. Borazon wheels have been a product of the General Electric Company since 1957, and to this day people worldwide respect these tools for their performance.
Borazon is a cubic form of boron nitrate, also known as CBN. It is a crystal that is synthetically manufactured by heating boron and nitrogen together. This process requires that the two chemicals are heated under temperatures greater that 1,800 °C, and at extreme pressures of 7 Gigapascals. The result: a crystal that has tremendous amounts of hardness, such that it is one of the few materials on earth that can scratch a diamond.
The substance is commonly used in grinding wheels and other industrial applications. Its hardness makes it a natural abrasive, and it can be manufactured en masse to accommodate the particular needs of industry. Borazon is especially useful for jewel crafting, as its hardness allows it to chip, cut, and shape precious stones such as rubies, emeralds, and even diamonds.
Diamonds remain as the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth and are still demanded for industrial use, but Borazon affords certain advantages over it. For one, pure diamonds cannot withstand extreme heat, and will disintegrate beyond 871 °C. On the other hand, Borazon grinding wheel can take abuse at high temperatures and pressures that diamond grinding wheels cannot. Also, because they are synthetically manufactured, Borazon crystals are potentially cheaper to produce in large quantities than it is to mine or produce equal amounts of diamond.
Resource Box:
Borazon grinding wheel parts and grinding machines are a specialty of Continental Diamond Tool. They produce and manufacture grinding tool parts, made of fine diamond, CBN or Borazon. Requests for quotations for service can be made online at www.cdtusa.net.
