Ball Bearing

Thrust Bearing Information

The nature of a thrust bearing is that it works as a rotary bearing. What does that mean? It means that this type of bearing allows the movement of two parts that are rotating. And their job doesn’t end there it is designed to allow for this rotating movement and while doing so supporting a high axial load.

Thrust bearings cannot support radial loads and so ball bearings with thrust bearings are used to accommodate this. Bearings are delicate little pieces of metal and need to be handled with care. Even when placing the bearing within an application the bearing must be fitted perfectly otherwise the bearing will not work correctly and will lead to failure. The slightest misalignment of the bearing can cause a whole machine to break down.

Thrust Bearing Races

A big part of how a bearing works is down the races used. What are races? The races of a rolling-element bearing are what the rolling-elements ride on. The large race that goes into a bore is called the outer race, and the small race that the shaft rides in is called the inner race. Thrust bearing races are designed to handle loads at a 90 degree angle.  Here are some descriptions of the different variations of races available and how they differ from each other:

Flat Race Thrust Bearing – this type of bearing consists of two flat washers with the ball in between them. One of the great things about flat races is that they accommodate for external odd behaviour that cannot be predicted. This is because there are no groves in the races and so the races have more freedom to have room for mishaps and slightly off loads.

One Directional Grooved Race Thrust Bearing – these types of bearings can handle up to twice as much load as flat race bearings and they are up to three times faster as well.

Two Directional Grooved Race Thrust Bearing – this type of bearing is a little different as it consists of two races that are stationary and one race that rotates. This bearing has pretty much the same qualities as the one directional bearing in speed and load capacity except that this bearing can support thrust in two directions.
