How-to Prepare Your House for a Painting Job

Years and years have passed and now it is time for a home improvement project. Now your beautiful home is in need of a good repainting job. But before you can start painting, you will have to do some preparation to make sure the new paint last longer.

So, in order to save cost and time (contractors just love to drag the dateline, right?) you can do the job by yourself. You can also include your family in the process and the job will be so much fun.

First of all, start by giving your house a good healthy bath. Wash it down using a hose. Scrub stubborn dirt with a sponge and soapy water. Make sure you cover every part of the house including the windows, doorways and also the pillars and foundations.

Next, grab a wire brush or a metal scraper and begin to remove defective paint. Be careful to not over-do the scraping to avoid further damages on the existing paint. Then, get a piece of sandpaper and wrap it around a wood block. Move it up and down or back and forth to remove the old paint and also to smooth rough edges.

Before the real painting job starts, make sure you have repaired the leaking gutters and the cracks on the wall need to be filled, sand and primed. This is to avoid any problems from occurring in the future.

It is advised that you remove all accessories such as light bulbs, decorations and other fixtures before you start painting. If you wish to repaint your awning and shutter, take the off and paint them separately. This is to make to painting job easier and less time consuming.

Lastly, do not forget to lay a coating or primer. The type of coating depends on the type of paint you want to use for the painting job. For latex paint, use latex primers; for solvent-thinned paints, use solvent-base primers; and for metals, use metal primers. Coatings will provide extra protection and form a firm foundation for finishing paints.

Now your house is ready to be repainted. You can either do it yourself or call a trusted contractor to perform the job. If you have the time and the energy, it will be so much fun to do the home improvement activity by yourself. It will give you some sort of satisfaction after you have completed the task.

Happy painting!
