Plastic Routing Concerns
In the world of plastic routing, one of the biggest concerns that people have is how the surface finish of the finished product looks and feels. When people use plastic machining tools to create exhibits, signs or displays that will be viewed by the public, they want the edge finish to look superb. With the correct plastic routers bits, it’s possible to create the most consistently beautiful edge finish every time.
The finish is also largely influenced by chipload, though, which is the generation of chips from the machine during the routing process. Plastic machining tools can create a consistent edge finish every time if the right size of chip is produced every time, which is usually between 0.004 and 0.012. This is not the only concern with plastic routing, though, because even the most consistent chipload cannot compensate for improper holding of the parts. The condition of the plastic routers bits and the CNC machine also plays a huge role in the finished product. Using tools that are not designed well or functioning properly will make the odds of creating a smooth finish highly unlikely.
Plastic routing machines may have two different spoilboard systems that use vacuums to hold the parts, which are the dedicated spoilboard (which is prevalent in thermoforming) and the flow-through system (which is more popular in sheet fabrication). Either type of plastic machining systems must be properly designed to adequately hold down the parts and provide a good finish. The condition of the plastic routers bit and other parts of the machine are also critical to producing excellent edges finish. The best plastic routing tools in the world can’t perform properly if their collet systems are not maintained to industry standard; the finish will deteriorate and the scrap rate will accelerate.
At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is to use high quality tools and maintain them properly; the rest will come together with adequate training and practice.
