How to Choose Proper Wine Glasses

Wine is the drink that goes with almost every type of European and Western food. Choosing the right wine is ideal when it comes to enjoying the flavors of the food. Wine compliments red meat and white meat, it calms the body and soothes the senses. There are many types of wine as there are many types of wine glasses and more often than not, most wines have their own specially designed glass. But for domestic use, selecting a good wine glass for any type of wine is the best way to go.

A little thought goes a long way in purchasing the right kind of wine glass to get the most enjoyment out of every bottle of wine. Though many may think there is only one type of wine glasses, the fact is-there are many kinds of varying styles and quality. Though there are many manufacturers of fine and expensive crystal glasses, there isn't a need to spend big bucks as long as you purchase a glass that obeys to these few rules:

Rule #1 - Pay attention to the glass's make. At the very basic, it has to be plain and clear because part of the wine appreciation and enjoyment is its color as the color gives a lot of information about the wine, the grapes used, the age of the wine and so on. Most glasses of wine are either clear or made as frosted glass.

Rule #2 - Size comes next in line. The bowl of the wine glass should be large enough to allow a fair measure of wine to be poured inside while leaving enough room for the wine to be gently swirled without spilling it. Wine is swirled to release its aromas. Most wine glasses are tiny and thus, have to be filled to the brim in order to achieve a decent size pour and therefore, this is plainly inadequate.

Rule #3 - No glass is complete without a stem and this is not only for aesthetic reasons but mainly so that the wine glass may be held without covering the bowl and without affecting the wine temperature. If the wine glass is held at the bowl, this will increase the temperature of the wine that has been served chilled. Accomplished wine taster never or rarely touch the bowl as it has become second nature to hold the glass by its base or stem.

Rule #4 - Apart from selecting a style, to the stem and to the size there is another consideration to look into and that would be the shape of the bowl. This is considered important as since good glasses taper in somewhat at the top, so that the aperture is narrower than the bowl lower down. While this form is aesthetically pleasing, it is also of functional importance. The tapered shape of the wine glass serves to concentrate the aromas when the wine taster uses a swirling action. Swirling releases precious aromas from the wine and the tapered opening helps compliment this. This design is evident in glasses designed for Pinot Noir in which the full range of aromas is appreciated and important while enjoying the wine.
