How to Create a Jewelry Studio
If you are interested in making jewelry from home it is of the utmost importance that you have some semblance of a workspace set up. That is to say, an at-home studio equipped with the proper tools needed to create beautiful works of body adornment. It is near impossible to effectively make jewelry without having a space to do it in.
If you are lucky enough to own a jeweler's work bench, better recognized as a watchmaker's bench, then congratulations. A watchmaker's bench is organization at its best with drawers and compartments for every tool you could ever own, not to mention enough storage for all your beads, pieces of metal, findings, chains and anything else you can think of to organize. However, watchmaker's benches do not come cheap and unless you happen to also be an incredibly skilled carpenter there are other alternatives that will give you almost as good a set up.
If you plan to work with metal there are a few absolutely necessary items you will need in your at-home studio. Probably the most important is a room that has adequate ventilation. This can include an open window with an exhaust fan, or a large open space such as a garage or shed with ventilation openings. The last thing you want to do is be in a cooped up room with no air flow as this is extremely dangerous and hazardous to one's health. Other items to have are a small anvil, ball-peen hammers, a steel bench block, ring mandrel, tension saw with jeweler's blades, dremel with flex-shaft, draw plate, pickle bath, and a good vice-grip to name a few items. An oxy/acetylene torch with interchangeable tips or small oxy/propane torch is necessary for soldering and annealing.
If you plan to make jewelry from home and will be creating space for a studio plan to invest a large chunk of money for your space. Working in metal is for the serious artisan. Now that you have an idea of how to create a jewelry studio it's time to really consider your needs and if you believe you will see a return on your investment.
