All about the Linear-motion Bearing

When compared to the normal bearings such as the ball bearings (deep groove ball bearing, self-aligning ball bearings, thrust ball bearing, etc), needle bearings, pillow block bearing, the linear-motion bearing is rarely known to most people. It is a bearing designed to provide free motion in one dimension. Like many other products, the linear-motion bearings also have various types. But generally, they can be divided into two categories, i.e. rolling-element and plane.

Let us see the first category. An outer ring that looks like a sleeve and several rows of balls retained by cages consist of the rolling-element bearing. The cages are originally machined from solid metal and are quickly replaced by stampings. This kind of product has many characteristics such as the smooth motion, low friction, high rigidity and long life. Besides, they are also economical, and easy to maintain and replace.

Rolling-element bearings can be manufactured in two forms: ball bearing slides and roller slides. The former one is the most simple type. They are also called the ball slides. They can be applied in various places such as the manufacturing industry, the electronics and construction industries. Besides, they can also be used in the furniture industry. For example, a ball bearing drawer slide is just widely used in this industry. The later one is also known as crossed roller slides. Like the former one, they can also be used in many places including clean rooms, vacuum environments, and automation machinery, etc.

Now, it's time to see the second category, that is the plain bearing. To some extent, this kind of product is quite similar to the first type except that they slide without the use of ball bearings.

It is no doubt that there are also much differences between the two types of products. Firstly, plain bearings can run on hardened steel or stainless steel shafting (raceways), or can be run on hard-anodized aluminum or soft steel or aluminum, while the rolling-element bearings can only run on hardened steel or stainless steel shafting. Secondly, compared to the rolling-element bearings, the plain bearings are less rigid. Thirdly, plain bearings handle contamination well and often do not need seals, while the other is not. Fourthly, Plain bearings generally handle a wider temperature range than rolling-element bearings. Last but not the least one, the plain bearings (plastic versions) do not require oil or lubrication, while the other kind is the opposite.

All in all, the linear-motion bearing is quite complicated. It requires much time to learn about this type of product. Meanwhile, it is also quite necessary to learn about it.
