Information about Stainless Steel Lettering for Use on Signs
Stainless steel letters are available in either brushed finish or polished finish. Often referred to as satin or chrome/mirror finish. It can depend on where the letters are being fitted as to which option you choose. Polished stainless steel cut out letters are, as their name suggests highly polished and so will reflect the sun like a mirror. If your shop is in a particularly sunny spot you may want to choose the satin/brushed finish instead. The brushed finish also lends itself to a more industrial feel if you choose a particular type/look of font. The brushed finish can also be supplied in a horizontal or vertical direction. Unless specified the rule of thumb is that horizontal grain would be supplied.
If the lettering is for a boat or in a position close to the sea then 316 marine grade needs to be used. Visually you will not see any difference between 304 standard grade and 316 marine grade.
Stainless steel cut out letters are not generally available `off the shelf` but are made to order so can be supplied to whatever font takes your fancy (as long as it is practical). Company logos can also be supplied cut from artwork. It has to be noted though that due to the nature of stainless steel some logos are not suitable in this material. If the logo has a diagonal shape for instance it can be very sharp and in effect be the same as a knife. Also if part of the logo comes to a thin point such as an ellipse shape (which is very popular with designers these days) then that also has the potential to be dangerous and would not be advised.
One of the advantages of stainless steel letters is that they can be cut much smaller than flat cut acrylic letters. However they can only be glued or stuck in place with VHB tape as they are too small for any metal fixings. The stroke thickness of a letter `I` for example has to be around 10/15mm for metal fixings.
Built up stainless steel letters can also be made much smaller than in say built up acrylic. Built up stainless steel can be manufactured down to 50mm high x 10mm returns. (the return being the thickness of the letter). It is subject to the font/typestyle however as not all fonts can be made that small. For a really special look the small letters can be supplied with blended edges so that a smooth line is achieved around the edges of the letter.
Generally speaking stainless steel letters are maintenance free. The fixings are metal and welded to the back of the letter which makes them very strong. The material will not fade in time in the way that acrylic can do (albeit over a length of time).
