Bearing – The Different Meanings Of The Word

Bearing is a word with several different meanings, here is an outline of some of those meanings and how they can be used in sentences.

Bearings (such as in machinery and modes of transportation) - a ball bearing is a type of rolling element bearing, which means spherical balls are used to allow two components to move easily without much friction. There are many different types of bearings in this sense such as thrust ball bearing, roller ball bearings, taper roller bearing, and needle bearing etc. All of which operate slightly different but have the same principle at heart where they enable a number of parts to move easily together. These types of bearings are found in cars, engines, ships, and skateboards for example.

Bearing (with regards to navigation) - a bearing is a word also used when navigating. The meaning of the word changes slightly depending on which area of navigation you are talking about. For example in marine navigation a bearing is to describe the direction from one object in correlation to another object, and in land navigation a bearing is the angle between two connecting points and a north-south line. For example the house can be at a bearing of 38 degrees from the car park.

Bearing (in relation to man) - the word bearing can be described as how one can conduct themselves or holds one self, their stature and carriage, for example you may say "I know him by his bearing". Or it can be used instead of saying ‘bringing a person to their senses' you would say ‘to bring one to their bearings' insinuating you are helping a person come to their centre, their power.

Bearing (with respect to birth) - when a women is expecting a child you can she is child bearing, another term for pregnant or giving birth. This term is also used in trees; a tree can be past bearing or in full bearing.

There are many more different meanings to the word bearing and can be used in many different situations and contexts.
