Refinish your Wheels in 12 Simple Steps
When it comes to a BMW enthusiast, the wheels are one of its most important features. They add flair to a BMW’s overall classy appearance. However, because of the close proximity to the ground, it is easy for wheels to become damaged. Because buying entirely new wheels can be extremely expensive, you can simply refinish them at home and save a fortune in the process. Follow these 12 simple steps to learn how to successfully refinish your BMW Wheels.
1. First you will want to remove wheels and separate them from the tires. You can do this yourself or take it to your local tire shop.
2. Using paint thinner, remove any paint or damaging adhesives from your wheel. You can use a clean rag with paint thinner on it to wipe down the entirety of your wheels.
3. Next you will want to clean the wheel using a cleaner and cloth. Take time to thoroughly remove unwanted grease or debris, the inclusion of these can completely ruin this entire process. You will want to fill in any large scratches with spot putty at this time.
4. Where you applied the putty, sand down those areas until they are flush with the rest of the wheel. You should begin with a tougher sandpaper and move to a finer paper to get the smooth feel and touch that is desired.
5. Spray on one to two coats of primer to your wheels. Don’t waste spray on the outside areas because they will eventually be covered up by the tire. Get in all other areas however, especially the sides of the spokes.
6. Evenly spray on a coat of filler primer. Once it’s painted this will help your wheel look extra smooth.
7. When the filler primer is dried, sand the wheels with a fine grade sandpaper. Try to use a grit of 320 or higher.
8. Using a prep-wide towelette, wipe down the wheel and make sure to go around the curves of every spoke.
9. Spray in the first coat of paint evenly and wait for it to completely dry. To give your wheels the smoothest look possible, spray the surface in a perpendicular manner as much as you can. To do this properly you will have the turn and move the wheel quite a bit.
10. Repeat the previous step two to three times. This will give your wheels the best look possible.
11. Spray on a layer of clear coating using the same methods as before.
12. Repeat step 12 to give your wheel that wet, shiny look.
After that your BMW Wheels will be looking brand new again. Save money and time by doing it yourself and refinish your wheels at home with a buddy. There’s no point in taking it to the shop anymore.
